Stray dogs

Responsibility for stray dogs, including out of hours stray dog duties, transferred from the police to Allerdale Borough Council from 6 April 2008. This was part of a national change as part of an amendment to the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005, which passed the responsibility for all stray dogs to local authorities.

If you find a stray dog contact Allerdale Borough Council on 01900 702800. If a dog is found after 5.15pm please ring Allerdale Borough Council’s out of hours service on 01900 871080.

The definition of a stray dog is a dog which is unsupervised in a public place or on private land without the permission of the owner/occupier of that land.

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 dogs found straying will be seized and taken to our contracted kennels at Whinmill Farm Kennels, High Harrington, Workington. Allerdale Borough Council has a policy of returning a stray dog to its home when it is wearing a collar and tag or is microchipped. The owner of the dog will incur a penalty on return of their dog.
